Diving in the Maldives is very often found on a divers wish-list of scuba diving holidays. Divers can choose between our other Maldives liveaboard vessels to optimize choice of Maldives diving itineraries, routes, and dive sites.
The Maldives is made up of a stunning group of atolls that play host to an underwater paradise brimming with marine wildlife. Located south west of Sri Lanka in the warm, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives include over 1200 tiny, low-lying coral islands surrounded by white sand. The abundance of marine life in the Maldives can be attributed to the ideal growing conditions the waters provide for coral reef. These coral reefs are home to more than 700 species of fish, many of which are sadly endangered. In the lagoons you can find whale sharks, turtles, octopus, manta rays and the giant Napoleon wrasse to name just a few.
The Maldives is tropical all year round and water temperatures range from 27°C to 29°C. There is no minimum number of dives required by local law and all diving is done from 'dhonis' or tenders to ensure accurate entry and exits points.
Divers have the opportunity to see a huge range of beautiful hard and soft corals as well as the potential to dive with manta rays, whale sharks, sharks, turtles, barracudas, jacks and tuna. Experience the first class diving in this unique underwater world and you may never want to leave!
Fish Head - Fish Head also known as Shark Point or Mushimasmingili Thila, fits the classic definition of a Thila - a large isolated flat top reef rising sharply from the inner atoll floor at 40 to 50m to around 10m from the surface. It is one of the best sites for seeing sharks. Featuring a series of caves and overhangs in between where you can see thousands of blueline snappers against a backdrop of black coral bushes and large gorgonians.
Fotteyo Kandul - Considered by many as one of the best dive sites in the Maldives, the atoll offers pristine reefs on the eastern side and thrilling shark dives - look out for hammerheads and grey reef sharks. A more challenging dive site which is not really advised for novice divers. Reef hooks recommended.
Maluku Kandul - The north east is peppered with submerged pinnacles covered predominantly in soft corals, whilst the west will see you surrounded by jacks and snappers. Keep an eye open for sharks and rays at 30m!
Guraidhoo Kandu South - Since the eastern side of the channel is open ocean, large predatory fish can regularly be spotted here. This site is famous for sightings of sharks, schools of eagle rays and the occasional sail fish and hammerheads. The best condition to do the dive is when the current is flowing into the atoll. The dive begins on the outer reef following the current into the atoll. Most of the pelagic species can be observed on the eastern side, where the reef drops off into the deep ocean. At the end of the dive in the channel, along the reef you can find overhangs with plenty of soft coral growth and small fish.
